How To Apply For Lagos Poem Project 2024
Do you want to showcase the poems you write, and are you between the ages of 16 and 25 and residing in Lagos, Nigeria? This is your opportunity to be part of the Lagos Poem Project, which offers workshops, mentorship, and publishing opportunities. Some of the confirmed poets participating in this transformative experience include the acclaimed Nigerian-born Nigerian-American National Youth Poet Laureate, Salome Agbaroji.
The Lagos Poem Project is run by Urban Word, the organization behind the launch of the National Youth Poet Laureate Program, with support from the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Embassy, and various national and local literary and arts organizations.
Benefits of Lagos Poem Project
This project aims to nurture and promote emerging young poets in Lagos, providing a platform to spotlight fresh talent. The five best poets will receive individual coaching from Salome Agbaroji and other great poets from Lagos. Additionally, their work will be presented on posters illustrating their poetry.
Submission Guidelines
Contributors interested in participating in the Lagos Poem Project must send their poems by September 30, 2024. This call is open to young writers aged between 16 and 25 from any part of Lagos State. We accept poems in any language; however, if your poem is in a language other than English, it would be helpful to include a translation. Every poet is allowed to enter one or two of their poems, but each poem should not exceed two pages.
What We’re Looking For
We are interested in your own style of writing, your unique perspective on various aspects of life, and, of course, your vision—your poem should be as close to the author’s intention as possible. We look forward to receiving work that speaks about who you are, your background, and your experiences. We do not have restrictions when it comes to themes, but we prefer poems that reflect the poet’s personal journey and artistic expression.
What Happens Next
By October 2024, a panel of judges, including poets, writers, organizational leaders, and professors, will evaluate the competition entries and select five winners from all the participants. These winners will be announced in November 2024. Additionally, their work will be featured on posters displayed in libraries across Lagos. The winners will also have the opportunity to be mentored and guided as they compile their poetry portfolios.
Second prize winners will be encouraged to attend monthly online poetry writing workshops, providing more opportunities to engage with the poetry community.
Deadline
Applications must be submitted by September 30, 2024. This is a valuable opportunity to showcase your poems and connect with experienced mentors.
