Apply For UNDP Undergraduate Essay Competition (Win Up To N1 Million)
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is on a mission to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through innovative ideas and public awareness. A major part of this effort is the Tax for SDGs Initiative, which underscores how efficient tax systems can support sustainable development by funding essential projects.
In line with these goals, UNDP has launched an Undergraduate Essay Competition, inviting students to voice their opinions and suggest solutions on how tax policies can advance the SDGs in Nigeria. The most compelling essays will be refined into policy briefs, potentially influencing real-world policy decisions.
Objective Of the UNDP Undergraduate Essay Competition
The primary aim of this competition is to engage Nigerian undergraduate students in meaningful discussions about the critical role of taxation, trade, and sustainable development. By participating, students will deepen their understanding of public finance and its far-reaching impact on social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
Theme
Participants should choose one of the following themes to write about:
- Innovative Tax Policies and Strategies: How can these drive sustainable development and help close the SDGs financing gap in Nigeria? Students are invited to explore the potential of new tax policies that can drive growth while funding essential projects.
- Inclusive and Sustainable Tax Systems: How do tax systems influence environmental sustainability, the digital economy, and trade? Participants should consider how inclusive tax structures can support a greener and more digital-forward Nigeria.
- Strengthening Tax Systems to Combat Illicit Financial Flows: What measures can be taken to reinforce Nigeria’s tax systems to reduce illegal financial activities? This theme challenges students to explore ways to close financial loopholes that undermine development efforts.

The competition is open to all Nigerian undergraduates currently enrolled in any recognized university or college in the country, regardless of their field of study. Participants must submit proof of national identification and their university student ID.
